Client: A startup based in India
In this case study, the client wanted to develop tablets, which would be sold to consumers for home care and personal care applications. These tablets could be between 5-15 g each, easily dispersible in water on its own, stable up to one year, after dissolution in water, without any phase separation or microbial contamination.
The technical challenges for the development of these tablets are:
(i) self-disintegration and dissolution of tablets in water within 30 minutes;
(ii) ensuring preservative efficacy as well as product stability lasting up to one year, after consumer prepares a liquid product at home using available water;
(iii) ensuring product efficacy, since the available space for ingredient incorporation is limited in a solid tablet
(iv) incorporation of functional liquid ingredients.
The range of applications for tablets was incredibly diverse: Foaming Hand/Face wash; Laundry Cleaning (in a bucket or machine wash); Toilet cleanser; Bathroom cleanser; Air purifier; Leave-on Personal care (face and body) products.
The project has been ongoing since 2022. Currently, it is in its fourth year since inception. This project involved a one-hour video consultation every week, including formulation & process development and product evaluations. The discussion topics included a wide range of subjects: ingredient selection for product efficacy; preservative efficacy; tablet density and self-dissolution in water; market regulatory requirements; product sensory; liquid incorporation into tablets; and process development.
Foaming Handwash tablet was launched in the market in 2023 under the brand name Klyntra.
